Father of Bloodstain Pattern Analysis

Eduard Piotrowski (late 19th century) was among the earliest scientists to apply physical principles to the interpretation of bloodstain patterns. His work demonstrated that bloodstain formation follows predictable physical laws related to fluid dynamics, gravity, and surface interaction.

Piotrowski conducted controlled experiments analyzing the shape, distribution, and directionality of bloodstains resulting from different mechanisms of bloodshed. His observations established foundational concepts such as angle of impact, velocity classification, and stain morphology.

These principles laid the groundwork for modern bloodstain pattern analysis (BPA), a discipline used to reconstruct violent events by interpreting blood evidence. Piotrowski’s work shifted blood evidence interpretation from speculation to scientific inference.

Modern BPA incorporates physics, mathematics, and biomechanics, supported by advanced imaging and computational modeling. While BPA has faced increased scrutiny regarding standardization and error rates, its core physical principles remain sound.
